Our greatest power is not love; our greatest power is choice.
Swami Radha
How much relief would it give you to understand that there are no Good or Bad Choices; just choices? Would that understanding, change the way you live your life?
How many times has the fear of making a wrong choice stood in your way? How many times has the fear of making the wrong choice left you in the mire of the status quo, in the muck of “this will do”?
Western Society has a penchant to qualify choices. Parents, Religious Leaders, Teachers, Friends and the Media are often quick to guide us to making the RIGHT choice; from how to respond when someone takes your toys away to what shampoo to purchase to what career you should embrace. Many of us measure our responses on the judgment of Good and Bad choices and the approval of those around us.
But what if choice actually possesses no qualifier? What if choices are simply choices? What if making a choice is simply a move you make in order to stand in another place so you can make another choice?
Contrary to popular belief you can recover from choices that don’t go as planned. Quite frankly it’s often the unexpected result of the choice that delivers the most pleasure, wisdom, insight, adventure and impact.
Are you holding yourself back from making a choice because you want to make only the right one?
Here’s an exercise worth exploring if you’re reluctant to make a wrong choice. Take a piece of paper and write these 2 questions; what do I want to do? And why do I want to do it?
If the answer to the second question makes you feel good (curious, enthusiastic, jazzed, nervous, excited, anticipatory, or exhilarated) then give it a shot. It may not turn out as planned but it will always offer another vantage point, a bit more information and it will undoubtedly offer a little more confidence in your “choosing” ability. That is of course if you promise to be kind enough to yourself to withhold judgment on the outcome.
Practicing choice is the quickest way to develop your intuition. And living by your intuition will develop a magical quality to the choices you make. You may still end up in unexpected places – but you will always be accompanied by a peace of mind that All Is Well.
The essence of choice is freedom and the essence of freedom is choice. The human spirit is not fragile. It is up for an adventure. Are you holding it back by refusing to make a choice?
